2nd International Bioerosion Workshop To Be Held At Harbor Branch Oceanographic,,Institution March 30-April 3, 1998

FT. PIERCE, FL - Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution will host the second International Bioerosion Workshop at its Education and Conference facility March 30 - April 3, 1998, with optional field trips before and after the meeting. The objectives of this workshop are to (1) exchange information on bioerosion with international experts from a variety of specialties such as microboring, reef carbonate budgets, modern and fossil collaborators; (2) to report on, and expand work begun or presented in Denmark at the First International Bioerosion Workshop hosted by Richard Bromley in September of 1996; and, finally, to continue discussion begun in Denmark by Klaus Vogel on the present state of knowledge of bioerosion. The workshop will consist of a series of talks, posters and field trips. Local field trips will include visits to sabellarid worm reefs, to exposures of Pleistocene limestone subjected to modern marine bioerosion, and to limestone quarries for examples of fossil bioerosion. Optional field trips will include the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and Disney World.

Harbor Branch is one of the largest oceanographic research facilities in the United States comprising of seven divisions: aquaculture; engineering R&D; environmental analysis and testing; marine operations technology; basic marine research; and marine education. The state-of-the-art conference facilities combined with the subtropical coastal setting should promote an exciting exchange of ideas and information. Florida has a rich fossil history, as well as an exciting modern environment in which to explore the frequently overlooked topic of bioerosion.

For additional information on this workshop, please contact Dr. Debra Krumm at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Museum, 5600 U.S. 1 North, Fort Pierce, Florida 34946. Tel (561) 465-2400 Ext. 428; Fax (561) 465-5743; or via e-mail: krumm@hboi.edu.
