American Fisheries Society Conference Attracting 2,000 Plus Scientists To Explore "Interfacing"

More than 2,000 fisheries professionals from around the world are expected to attend the August 24-28 meeting of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) at the Monterey Convention Center, California. Many of the 1,200 scientific papers and posters related to the conference theme, "Fisheries at Interfaces: Habitats, Disciplines, Cultures."

Forty-four symposiua cover such topics as shark ecology and biology, educational outreach, introduced nuisance species, protection of vulnerable aquatic species, restoration of Pacific salmon populations, new fish passage technology, and contributions of Native American traditional knowledge to modern fisheries management. Fisheries professionals use the conference to present cutting-edge research results, discuss new techniques, and network with colleagues.

In addition, a plenary session with eight distinguished speakers is scheduled for Monday, August 25, from 8 a.m. to noon. A trade show of more than 40 companies and agencies runs concurrently with most of the conference, and AFS members install new officers and vote on any policy statements or resolutions during the annual business meeting August 26.

Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the American Fisheries Society is an international scientific organization of professionals working to conserve and manage fisheries.
