Article series aims to educate on the truth of anti-aging claims

As part of a summer effort to present peer-reviewed research on the truth of anti-aging medicine, The Gerontological Society of America has released the first of two special sections in The Journals of Gerontology: Biological and Medical Sciences (Vol. 59A, No. 6).

Supervised by guest editors S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, Leonard Hayflick, PhD, and Thomas T. Perls, MD, MPH, this issue focuses on the history of anti-aging medicine, the debate among scientists on the societal implications of modifying the biological rate of aging, and the reality of what is currently known about the aging process. Fourteen articles are presented in total.

Under the title "Anti-Aging Medicine: The Hype and the Reality," both sections will later be combined into a single publication.

Support for the preparation of the issue was provided by the Alliance for Aging Research, the American Federation for Aging Research, Ellison Medical Foundation, and the National Institute on Aging. The pieces also continue The Gerontological Society of America's series of summer events designed to discuss the topic of anti-aging medicine. The subject is addressed in an article of the June issue of The Gerontologist, as well as a recently released edition of the Public Policy and Aging Report, put out by GSA's policy branch, the National Academy on an Aging Society.
