Josephine is a primocane raspberry, which means new canes bear fruit. The fruit is larger, with tougher skin and more cohesive than that of the standard cultivars. Six varieties of wheat, developed by Carl Griffey, and two varieties of soybeans, developed by Glenn Buss, received plant variety protection (PVP), which provides intellectual property protection for plant varieties that reproduce with true-breeding seed (as opposed to a plant patent, which protects any distinct and new variety of plant produced without the use of genetic seeds).
The wheat varieties are:
- Roane, which is widely adapted and now widely grown from the mid-Atlantic to the southern corn belt, the Northeast, and Ontario, Canada. It has broad disease and insect resistance. In many regions, it expresses resistance to powdery mildew, leaf rust, and Hessian Fly. It is one of few commercial varieties having recognized resistance to Fusarium Head Blight (also know has Scab) and to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus, which is vectored by aphids. It has exceptionally high yields and grain volume weight.
- Sisson, also widely adapted from the mid-Atlantic to the southern corn belt and the Northeast, widely grown, and being marketed in Ontario. It is early maturing and high yielding and has performed very well under no-till regimes. It is moderately resistant to powdery mildew.
