Fukuyama addresses biotechnology's impact on society at AAAS

Washington DC -4 June 2002- In this age of advanced biotechnology, no one can accurately predict the cultural impacts of cloning and genetic modification on human society. Should government regulations be applied to these advances? The consequences of the biotechnology revolution will be the focus of a public seminar 11 June at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Dr. Francis Fukuyama, the Bernard L. Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy at the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC, will be discussing his recent book, Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution, which expands on this issue. He will explore the role of institutions and innovative approaches that could be taken to regulate the biotechnology industry.

Dr. Fukuyama has taught at George Mason University and served on the State Department Policy Planning Staff. His main focus has been the role of culture and social capital in modern economic life and the impact of the information economy on society. He is also a member of the President's Council on Bioethics.
