In this week's BMJ Johnson et al describe the method by which they transmitted medical images to a non-resident senior doctor in order to obtain advice in an emergency situation. Although this method of consultation cannot replace direct patient contact, say the authors, it could mean that a patient may receive the correct treatment more quickly. However Johnson et al warn that the quality of the images is paramount to the success of such as system and recommend that any departments adopting such a procedure should be mindful of the Data Protection Act.
