Manatees saved by ONR-supported technology

Manatee Protection System at Port Canaveral consisted of retrofitting both gates of the Canaveral lock structure with an acoustic system composed of emitter and receiver units. The units are made from state-of-the-art piezoelectric composite transducer elements. Some other applications of the systems composite transducers are submarine sonar, surface ship mine hunting, nondestructive testing, medical ultrasound, and seismic exploration.

A demonstration of the newest, second-generation Manatee Protection System is planned for today, Mar. 24, at the Port Canaveral locks. A swimmer or towed target will go through the locks as they are closing to demonstration how the system works to detect and protect manatees from injury. For more information about the demonstration call Geoff Oldfather at 561-465-2400, ext. 687.
