Cornelia Dean, Science Editor of The New York Times, has just completed a new
book for the Columbia University Press with the above title. Dean, who lives on
two islands (Manhattan and Martha's Vineyard), has studied beach erosion and
replenishment, development issues on barrier islands, and related scientific and
public policy questions, which she will discuss in this special presentation for
her colleagues in the media. She will also discuss the process of writing and
