Most cited researchers in the world at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE -- (www.ucr.edu) -- 23 June 2003 -- Nine scientists at UCR have been recognized as some of the most highly cited researchers in the world. The Institute for Scientific Information provides a website (www.isihighlycited.com) identifying researchers, departments, laboratories and universities that have made fundamental contributions to the advancement of science and technology in the recent decade.

Researchers are listed in 21 broad subject categories including: life sciences, medicine, physical sciences, engineering and social sciences. These researchers are the most highly cited in each category for a period of 1981-1999 and comprise less than of 1% of all publishing researchers.

Among the UCR researchers that are the most highly cited include: Janet Arey, Roger Atkinson, William Carter, William Frankenberger, William Jury, Noel Keen, Albert Page, Natasha Raikhel and Nickolas Waser.

The Institute of Scientific Information includes the top 100 to 250 preeminent individual researchers in each of 21 subject categories who have demonstrated a great influence in their field as measured by citations to their work.

Citation is a key major of influence in science and technology. As one researcher refers to the work of another, they acknowledge the influence that work has on their own. Accumulated citations provide a statistical powerful resource for finding individual authors who have formed or changed the course of research in a subject.
