Renowned author, scientist and professor, John L. Casti, returns to IIASA

March 31, 2000 - LAXENBURG, Austria - The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis is pleased to announce that renowned author, scientist and professor, John Casti, Ph.D. has rejoined the IIASA staff as a general research scholar. Dr. Casti, who became a member of IIASA's scientific team in 1974, was with the world-renowned research institute until 1986. During his career, Casti authored eleven books, the most recent of which are, Paradigms Regained and Five More Golden Rules - Knots, Codes, Chaos, and Other Great Theories of 20th-Century Mathematics. Casti also holds a professorship at both The Santa Fe Institute, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and at the Technical University of Vienna, in Vienna, Austria. He also consults with the Austrian National Research Center in Seibersdorf, Austria.

At IIASA, Casti will apply his expertise in developing mathematical modeling to three research objectives: charting topography of Internet usage, modeling risks associated with the world's natural catastrophes, and developing mathematical and conceptual techniques to understand the evolution of complex adaptive systems. Casti will team with three of the 14 current projects at IIASA: Natural Catastrophes and Developing Countries (CAT), Risk, Modeling and Society (RMS), and Adaptive Dynamics Network (ADN).

In Five More Golden Rules, like its critically acclaimed predecessor, Five Golden Rules, Casti reveals the remarkable origins of some of the most monumental mathematical discoveries of the last century and sheds light on how these revolutionary ideas have reshaped our lives. In Paradigms Regained, a sequel to Paradigms Lost, gives a layman's account of several of the most puzzling controversies in modern science. He also authored Would-Be Worlds and The Cambridge Quintet.

IIASA is an independent, non-governmental, interdisciplinary research institution, which specializes in natural and social scientific research methods and models for use
