Scientific innovations, social issues and biobusiness at Bio Tech Helsinki 03 to be held in Helsinki, Finland on March 24-26, 2003

BioTech Helsinki 03 is a diverse look at the research, applications and financing of biotechnology. The international conference, a part of a large event for biotech professionals, will be organized in Finland for the first time. It will give a great opportunity for journalist to scan trends of the field with European and American specialists. Alongside the conference, BioTech Helsinki 03 will feature an Investor Forum and an exhibition introducing biotech innovations.

Opening words: Mr. Erkki Liikanen, Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society, European Commission and Dr. Bruno Hansen, Director of Life Sciences, Research Directorate, European Commission.

During the three-day conference, several parallel seminars will be held dealing with the latest biotechnological research results as well as social issues. Most of the conference speakers are top international biotech experts, among them Professor Ingo Potrykus of ETH,The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and Professor Masaru Tomita of Keio University, Japan.

The research group led by Professor Potrykus, known as the inventor of "the Golden Rice", has developed a genetically modified rice rich in vitamin A. Professor Tomita has become famous for developing the E-CELL software environment that can be used to model and simulate cellular metabolism.

Human genetics will be examined in a parallel seminar, with speakers such as Dr Kari Stefansson, President and CEO of deCODE genetics, a genomicscompany with exclusive rights to a gene bank on the Icelandic population, conducting research into the inherited causes of common diseases.
