Smarr to speak at AAAS meeting

On Saturday, Feb. 16 technology visionary Larry Smarr will deliver a plenary lecture before the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The topic: Extending the Internet with Sensornets: Supporting Science and Emergency Preparedness.

Smarr is the Director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [Cal-(IT)2], a joint venture of UC San Diego and UC Irvine, set up in December 2000 by California Gov. Gray Davis. Smarr is also a professor of computer science and engineering at UCSDs Jacobs School of Engineering. Previously, he was the founding director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champlaign. His lab there produced the first Web browser, NCSA Mosaic, a predecessor of Netscape Navigator.

Smarr will speak starting at 6:30PM at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, 39 Dalton Street, Boston.
