Agrobiosecurity and You: Topic of scientific meeting in Seattle

MADISON, WI -- Don't miss an exciting opportunity to learn about agriculture-related biosecurity issues in the U.S., and their impact on current research, information exchange, and even their impact on visa restrictions for foreign scientists. The symposium "Agrobiosecurity and You," will be held Monday, Nov. 1, from 12:55 to 3:10 pm in Grand Ballroom C of the Sheraton Hotel in Seattle as part of the Annual Meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America.

The Symposium will bring together five distinguished panelists, representing various organizations, presenting the following:

"Defense of United States Agriculture and Food," John Hoffman, representing the Department of Homeland Security

"Information Exchange Between Government, Industry and Academia in the Era of al Qaeda," Robert Norton, Auburn Univ., representing the Federation of Animal Science Societies

"Agricultural Biosecurity: The Mission of the National Plant Diagnostic Network," James Stack, Kansas State Univ., representing the National Plant Diagnostic Network

"The Roles of Professional Societies in U.S. Plant Biosecurity," Jacqueline Fletcher, Oklahoma State Univ., representing the American Phytopathological Society

"Biosecurity: A Perspective from the American Society for Microbiology," Anne Vidaver, Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln, representing the American Society for Microbiology

The role of researchers in the nation's response to threats will also be discussed. Presiding over the symposium is Harold Balbach of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.

The Annual Meetings of the three Societies will be held Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, Seattle, WA, under the theme, "Science to Secure Food and the Environment." Over 2,000 scientific papers and posters will be pre
