LIVNG CELLS AS NANO-ENGINEERS

Living cells can direct the assembly of nanostructured film to build tiny sanctuaries that keep them moist and even protect them high vacuum conditions, according to recent research by C. Jeffrey Brinker. When embedded in a slowly drying silica solution, the yeast and bacteria in Brinkers study responded to evaporation of solvents by releasing water, which created pH gradients that helped form protective capsules around the microorganisms where they can survive comfortably for weeks to months at a time. Brinker will present recent work towards integrating the encapsulated cells into solid state devices, such as cell-based biosensors, as well as describing the influence of the nanoconfinement on cellular activity.
