NSET to release EHS research needs assessment for engineered nanoscale material

What: NSET to Release Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Needs Assessment for Engineered Nanoscale Material Document

When: Thursday, September 21, 10 a.m. at www.nano.gov.

Telephone Briefing for Media: Monday, September 25 at 11 a.m with E. Clayton Teague, Ph.D., Director, National Nanotechnology Coordination Office and members of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee Contact Audrey Haar for the teleconference number.

The Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on Technology will release a document identifying environmental, health, and safety (EHS) research and information needs related to understanding and management of potential risks of engineered nanoscale materials. The document will be released concurrently with the House Science Committee Hearing on Research on Environmental and Safety Impacts of Nanotechnology to be held Thursday, September 21 at 10 a.m. ET. The document will be available at www.nano.gov.

The document will be used by the Federal agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) to inform and guide research programs. It also communicates to industry, universities, and other nongovernment research entities, approaches for obtaining the knowledge and understanding necessary to enable risk assessment and management of nanomaterials.

The Federal Government supports research on fundamental properties and processes of nanomaterials that can lead to the understanding of broad classes of materials in various environments and applications; the development of metrology, tools, and methods for measuring exposure to and for characterizing nanomaterials; and research on toxicological properties and health effects of nanomaterials that are expected to be used widely in commerce.
