National Academies Advisory: April 10 Meeting on Distress in Lab Animals

The Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, part of the National Academies' National Research Council, has convened a committee to update the institute's 1992 report RECOGNITION AND ALLEVIATION OF PAIN AND DISTRESS IN LABORATORY ANIMALS. The update will be done in two separate reports, one on distress and the other on pain.

The first report will look at the causes of stress in lab animals and how to determine when stress becomes distress. It will provide principles for committees that oversee institutional animal care to use in identifying and minimizing this distress. The committee's first information-gathering meeting will be held next week.
