In an upcoming G&D paper, Dr. Yoichi Taya (National Cancer Center Research Institute, Japan) and colleagues report on a novel nuclear role for the clathrin heavy chain protein as a p53-dependent transcriptional cofactor. The researchers found that clathrin heavy chain (CHC), which was heretofore solely recognized as a cytosolic component of the intracellular vesicle transport machinery, directly interacts with p53 in the cell nucleus to promote expression of p53 target genes. Dr. Taya anticipates that "this finding may open a new unexpected research field that connects p53, endocytosis and tumorigenesis."
