Proctor Medal goes to research team

Rockville, Md. -- The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) announced today that Trevor Lamb, ScD, FRS, FAA and Edward N. Pugh, Jr., PhD, have been selected to receive the Proctor Medal, ARVO's highest honor, which is presented annually for outstanding research in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology. The award will be presented to the research team during ARVO's 2006 Annual Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in May, 2006.

Professors Lamb and Pugh were chosen as Proctor Medal recipients for providing a comprehensive analysis of the molecular events underlying the photoreceptor's response to light and for applying their model to the electroretinogram (ERG) in a way that enables straightforward use of the ERG in the analysis of deficits in a variety of basic and clinical situations.

Professor Lamb, is ARC Federation Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, and he will be the Director of ANU's new ARC Center of Excellence in Vision Science to be established this fall. He received doctorates in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge in England where prior to joining ANU, he was a Professor of Neuroscience for eight years. In 2003, he and Pugh were recipients of the Alcon Research Institute Award for Outstanding Research in Ophthalmology and Vision Science.

Dr. Pugh is Jules and Doris Stein Research to Prevent Blindness Professor of Ophthalmology and Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He received his master's degree in Mathematics and his doctorate in Mathematical Psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and was the first recipient in 1984 of the Troland Award of the National Academy of Sciences. Pugh is a member of the National Institutes of Health's Peer Review Advisory Committee and serves on the editorial boards of both Neuron and The Journal of General Physiology.
