Symposium explores opportunities presented by US re-entry into UNESCO

February 19, 2005--Washington, DC--After a 19-year absence, the United States rejoined UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, in October 2003. Subsequent opportunities for increased engagement and influence in UNESCO programs will be featured at a symposium at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington, DC. UNESCO promotes international cooperation among its 190 Member States and six Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication.

"UNESCO: Opportunities Upon U.S. Re-entry" will take place on Saturday, February 19, from 2-5 pm at the Mariott Wardman Park Hotel as a component of the AAAS focus on international science that day. Expected attendees include representatives of professional organizations, NGOs, government, and academia.

Speakers in the symposium will present an overview of U.S. interests and priorities and opportunities for U.S. engagement in UNESCO's three major divisions, Education, Science, and Culture. Speakers are The Hon. Louise Oliver, U.S. Ambassador to UNESCO; Walter Erdelen, Assistant Director-General, Natural Sciences, UNESCO; Shirley Malcom, Director of Education and Human Resources Programs, AAAS:, Bruce Alberts, immediate past president of the National Academies of Science; and Terry Garcia, Executive Vice President, National Geographic Society.

Moderator for the session's discussion period is Dr. Rita Colwell, Distinguished Professor, Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, University of Maryland and former Director of the National Science Foundation.
