2004 Geriatric Oral Research Award to Slade

Honolulu, Hawaii...The 2004 Geriatric Oral Research Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) will be presented today to Dr. Gary Slade, Professor at the University of Adelaide Dental School, Adelaide, Australia.

Dr. Slade earned his dental degree from the University of Melbourne in 1982, a Diploma of Dental Public Health from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1988, and a PhD degree from the University of Adelaide in 1994. From 1994, he held a faculty appointment at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), School of Dentistry, USA, for nine years before recently returning to Australia.

Dr. Slade has made outstanding contributions to research concerned with oral health outcome assessment in the elderly. This work, which involved the development and evaluation of the Oral Health Impact Profile scale, placed him at the forefront of an international movement to create oral-health-related quality-of-life measures for dentistry. The measure that he developed was conceptually based, created using established scale development methodologies, broad in scope and technically advanced in terms of structure and scoring methods. He has used this measure in a wide variety of settings to expand our understanding of the health and quality-of-life outcomes of dental and oral diseases, and played a major role in a complex international collaborative study which examined cultural variations in the social impact of oral disease.

Dr. Slade has also made a significant contribution to the epidemiology of oral diseases in elderly populations. Over the last ten years, he has conducted a major longitudinal study concerning caries, periodontal disease, and tooth loss in the elderly. More recently, he has begun to contribute to the literature on the relationship between systemic health and oral conditions, most of which has been concerned with aging populations.

Dr. Slade is not only a highly talented researcher but also has a
