2004 Young Investigator Award to Fleming

Honolulu, Hawaii...The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), convening here today at the Hawaii Convention Center for its 82nd General Session, has awarded the 2004 Young Investigator Award to Dr. Garry James Patrick Fleming, a native of Kerry, Ireland, who obtained a First Class Honours Degree at the University of Limerick, followed by a PhD at the University of Birmingham, UK. He is currently Lecturer in Dental Biomaterials at the University of Birmingham.

Dr. Fleming's research has focused on dental biomaterials, including the influence of clinically induced variables in dental luting cements and alternatives to amalgam alloys. He has obtained funding form industrial and charitable sources and has published in excess of thirty papers in peer-reviewed journals. A particular strength, even at this early stage in his career, is his encouragement of young researchers: His students have been successful in obtaining Divisional IADR awards on five separate occasions. This is a reflection of his scientific and mentoring skills, emphasizing his desire to develop clinicians as researchers in dental materials science. The IADR Young Investigator Award, supported by The Procter & Gamble Co., is designed to stimulate basic research in all dental disciplines. To be eligible for the award, the recipient must not have reached his/her 36th birthday at the time the award is presented. The award consists of a cash prize and plaque.

Dr. Fleming received his award during the Opening Ceremonies of the IADR's 82nd General Session. One of 15 Distinguished Scientist Awards conferred annually by the IADR, the award represents the highest honor the IADR can bestow.
