2005 H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award

Baltimore, Maryland...The 2005 H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award will be presented today to Dr. R. Gary Rozier, of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, during the Opening Ceremonies of the 83rd General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), convening at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Dr. Rozier is an outstanding scholar known worldwide for his leadership in Dental Public Health and oral epidemiology. His scholarly work and innovations have been adopted nationally and throughout the world. He has been active in public health service, and is known for his unfailing commitment to improving the quality of dental health practice. He directs one of the worlds leading training programs in Dental Public Health, and his graduates hold significant academic and public health practice positions throughout the world. Three themes run through Dr. Roziers distinguished research career. First, he has been devoted to developing methods and epidemiological findings to help facilitate basic public health core functions. Second, he has conducted dental health services research concerning access to dental care, particularly for the disadvantaged. His third area of research is on effective public health and professional interventions to promote oral health and prevent dental diseases. He currently holds research grants that integrate these three areas of research into a research agenda addressing dental caries, the most widespread and costly disease of childhood (supported by four US Federal agencies). Most of his efforts are focused directly on having an immediate but lasting impact on the publics health. In the area of preventive dentistry, Dr. Rozier and his collaborators have studied various aspects of community water fluoridation, sealants, fluoride mouthrinse, fluoride supplements, professionally applied topical fluoride, and various combinations.
