AIUM announced education and research grant recipients at the 2004 AIUM Annual Convention

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) announced the winners of its 2004 Education and Research Fund (ERF) grants and the Gilbert Baum Memorial Grant at the 2004 AIUM Annual Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 22, 2004.

The ERF, which has recently been renamed the AIUM Endowment for Education and Research (EER), was developed in 1996 and began awarding clinical and basic science ultrasound research grants in 2001.

This year's winners are

Arthur C. Fleischer, MD
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Assessment of Tumor Perfusion With Microbubble-Enhanced Sonography: Correlation to MR and FDG-PET Imaging in Implanted Murine Tumors, $10,000

Daniel Breitkopf, MD
University of Texas Medical Branch
Development of an Interactive Multimedia Computer-based Educational Program for Pelvic Sonography, $10,000

Mary E. Norton, MD
University of California, San Francisco
The Relationship Between Placental Angioarchitecture and Antenatal Growth Discordance in Monochorionic Twin Pregnancies, $9,996

In addition, a special one-time award, the Gilbert Baum Memorial Grant, was also awarded to Tatjana Rundek, MD, PhD, Columbia University for her research on Carotid Artery Distensibility and Risk of Stroke, $10,000. Barbra Baum, wife of late ultrasound pioneer and AIUM past president Dr Gilbert Baum, provided the gift to fund this special award.

The EER, under the auspices of the AIUM, plans to continue awarding several ultrasound research grants each year to its members and is proud to sponsor cutting-edge research in the field of ultrasound.
