Childhood Obesity, Diabetes And Hyperlipidemia

Body fat distribution may determine risk for diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Relation of circumferences and skinfold thicknesses to lipid and insulin concentrations in children and adolescents: The Bogalusa Heart Study. by David S. Freedman, Mary K. Serdula, Sathanur R. Srinivasan and Gerald S. Berenson

The authors found a clear relationship between abdominal fat according to waist circumference and abnormal serum lipids and insulin in 3000 children aged 5-17. Thus, abdominal obesity in children may predict later diabetes and heart disease.
