Comprehensive pituitary center at Cedars-Sinai brings together under one roof,,medical, surgical, research and other components

The third member of the team, Vivien Bonert, M.D., will serve as clinical coordinator, overseeing and coordinating all aspects of pituitary research. In this role, she will be responsible for recruitment of patients, coordinating patient care, and serving as the liaison with the various pharmaceutical companies involved in research projects. In addition, she will manage the large, computerized database of clinical patients, assessing those that are appropriate for participation in state of the art clinical trials and research projects. These are aimed at bringing the latest technologies to benefit patients with pituitary disorders.

In designing the Pituitary Center, Dr. Melmed and Dr. Shahinian decided on a novel approach that would focus on the disease as a whole rather than on the individual specialties required to treat it. This visionary concept has resulted in a multi-disciplinary center structured around the patient. "It's truly patient friendly and focused toward caring for people with pituitary disorders," said Dr. Shahinian.

"This is an innovative idea," said Dr. Bonert. "It is one of the first - if not the first - center in the United States where endocrinologists and surgeons work side by side in an integrated fashion, focusing together on all aspects of diagnosing, treating and researching pituitary disorders - from initial triage through surgical intervention and post-op follow-up."

While enhanced patient convenience is certainly an advantage offered by the Pituitary Center, it is by no means the only one. The very fact that the endocrinologist and surgeon -- plus all of the other disciplines involved -- will be under one roof means that communication and interaction will be streamlined as everyone has immediate access to combined medical charts and records.
