Financial constraints at universities, which resulted in drastic hikes to tuition fees have also manifested in difficulties attracting high-quality dentists interested in careers in education or research. There is an increasing disparity between the income of private practice dentists, and those who choose academic careers. The US brain drain exacerbates these problems by wooing away quality Canadian educators and researchers, while at the same time, offering to pay off high debt loads incurred by students during their educations, Dr. Sweetnam remarked.
