Early trial at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital shows Angiostatin is safe

ecome one of the hottest areas of cancer research in recent years. Dr. Folkman and his colleagues, in conjunction with EntreMed, Inc., a Rockville, Md.-based biotechnology company, have been developing and are now testing anti-angiogenesis drugs in human clinical trials. Dozens of drugs are under development by other companies all over the world.

Some researchers believe that Angiostatin and other anti-angiogenesis drugs will expand the armamentarium of drugs that will halt cancer growth, with the disease becoming more a chronic illness patients can live with.

Drs. Capizzi and DeMoraes hope to discuss the next phase in studying the drug with EntreMed. At the same time, the scientists are also interested in developing new biochemical markers to measure the effectiveness of Angiostatin in future trials.
