Latest advances in end-of-life care to be featured at Tampa conference

Tampa, FL (Oct. 22, 2003) -- The role of caregivers in end-of-life care, compassion fatigue, and pain management for patients nearing death are among the topics that will be covered at the conference "Charting the Course in End-of-Life Care: From Research to Policy and Practice" Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Tampa Airport Marriott Hotel.

The conference is sponsored by the Center for Hospice, Palliative Care and End-of-Life Studies at the University of South Florida, a community-academic partnership bringing together hospices across West Central Florida and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute with faculty from the USF Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Arts and Sciences. The group seeks to improve end-of-life care through research, education and public policy.

The conference is expected to draw physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, counselors and other health professionals as well as administrators and policy makers from across the country.

Eduardo Bruera, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Palliative Care & Rehabilitative Medicine at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Bruera will discuss the challenges of providing end-of-life care to patients from different cultural groups.
