Learn and Serve announcement and call for proposals

The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, The University of Pittsburgh and the Corporation for National Service Learning are pleased to announce the schools that have been awarded the 2002 Learn and Serve grant awards.

Service learning as defined by the Corporation for National Service, is an innovative method of teaching and learning that integrates community service activities into academic curricula. The 2002 grantees submitted innovative approaches to service learning in their applications, and will be implementing these ideas in the Fall 2002 term.

Ten grants of $8,000 each were awarded to the following schools and professors to implement their vision of service learning:

California State University at Fullerton Eric Solberg Ph.D
University of the District of Columbia Clavin Fields
East Carolina University Sharon Ballard Ph.D and Angela Smith
Holyoke Community College Jackie Griswold Ph.D
Indiana University of Pennsylvania Teresa Shellenbarger Ph.D
Langston University Kathy Goff Ph.D
Southwest Missouri State University Susan Hinck Ph.D
University of North Texas Cheryl Harding Ph.D
Middle Tennessee State University Catherine Stogner Ph.D
State University of West Georgia Janice Purk Ph.D

Applications were reviewed and final awardees were determined in April by a seven member selection committee led by AGHE and University of Pittsburgh staff. The selection criteria included the programs design, its timeline, the universitys organizational capacity, and the potential for sustainability of the program.
