New book on anti-aging hype consolidates latest research

The Gerontological Society of America's 2004 peer-reviewed article series on the truth of anti-aging medicine is now available in a single volume. "Anti-Aging Medicine: The Hype and the Reality" combines two special sections originally published in The Journals of Gerontology: Biological Sciences in June and July of 2004.

Supervised by editors S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, Leonard Hayflick, PhD, and Thomas T. Perls, MD, MPH, this book focuses on the history of anti-aging research, the debate among scientists on the societal implications of modifying the biological rate of aging, and the reality of what is currently known about the aging process. Further attention is given to growth hormones and supplements and legal issues associated with the practice of anti-aging medicine. Twenty-two articles are presented in total.

Support for the preparation of the articles was provided by the Alliance for Aging Research, the American Federation for Aging Research, Ellison Medical Foundation, and the National Institute on Aging.
