WHAT:
Please join us for a news conference by phone bringing together the leading peanut allergy experts to discuss the new research in the field and its impact on the 1.5 million Americans suffering from severe peanut allergy. Major advances in the diagnosis and understanding of peanut allergy are reported in the July 2003 Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI). The JACI is the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI).

Among the studies featured in the JACI:

• Breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of severe reactions to peanuts

• Better understanding as to why peanut is such an allergenic food

• Discoveries that could relieve some of the burden the allergy puts on families

WHY:
Peanut allergy is the leading cause of fatal and near-fatal food-induced anaphylaxis in the United States. Each year, thousands of people rush to hospital emergency rooms, and approximately 50 to 100 people die after accidentally eating peanuts. Anaphylactic reactions to peanut can occur at any age and strict avoidance is the only means of preventing an allergic reaction.
