The free event is sponsored by the Philadelphia Section of the American Chemical Society and will be held in conjunction with the Society's 228th National Meeting, Aug. 22-26. The American Chemical Society is the world's largest scientific society
Other organizations participating in the health fair are the American Cancer Society, The Susan G. Komen Foundation, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Independence Blue Cross, the U.S. Environmental Agency, the Philadelphia Health Department and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School.
The health awareness fair will be held in Market East Court, adjacent to the Market East Train Station on the Mall Level of The Gallery at Market East, located on Market Street between 8th and 11th Streets.
Independence Blue Cross will provide information at the fair on free or low cost health coverage for children, on low cost adult insurance and on immunization. The EPA will focus on lead poisoning and asthma treatment and prevention as well as other environmental health issues. The Philadelphia Health Department will highlight its health screening and information services. Information will be distributed on early cancer detection.
There will be a number of hands-on demonstrations for children, including urinalysis testing, the value of sunscreen in preventing skin cancer and the importance of hand-washing to prevent the spread of disease. The University of Pennsylvania Dental School will use puppets to show the proper way to care for teeth.
Health and Wellness is also the theme of this year's National Chemistry Week, Oct. 17-23. As part of this annual celebration of the contributions of chemistry, the American Chemical Society is sponsoring health fairs around the
