ARVO's Cogan Award to Austrian biomedical professor

Rockville, Md. -- The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) announced today that Wolfgang Drexler, PhD, has been selected to receive the 2007 Cogan Award during ARVO's Annual Meeting to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in May 2007.

The Cogan Award recognizes a researcher 40 years of age or younger at the time of nomination who has made important contributions to research in ophthalmology or visual science directly related to disorders of the human eye or visual system, and who also shows substantial promise for future research. Drexler was selected to receive the award for his role in the development of the Optical Coherence Tomography technique leading to spectacular applications in the diagnosis of retinal diseases as well as cellular level resolution and functional imaging.

Drexler is a Professor of Biomedical Imaging at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at Cardiff University in Wales, UK, and was previously an Associate Professor at the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Physics of the Medical University of Vienna. He received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Vienna and later was a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.
