'Building international collaborations' is theme of 2006 ARVO meeting

Rockville, Md. More than 9,500 eye and vision researchers will gather to attend the 2006 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Annual Meeting to be held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., April 30-May 4, 2006. The predominant focus of this year's meeting is how scientists can join together with their peers in other countries to make strides in advancing vision research.

The ARVO/Alcon Keynote Session on Sunday, April 30 at 5:15 p.m. will feature Paul Sieving, MD, PhD, Director of the National Eye Institute, Bethesda, Md., and Gullapali N. Rao, MD, President of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and Chairman of the Board for the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India. Both speakers will discuss efforts underway to establish global partnerships in vision research.

"A number of successful collaborations between vision scientists from various countries are currently underway. ARVO is pleased to spotlight these activities during our Annual Meeting and play a role in encouraging researchers to work with their counterparts overseas," said ARVO Executive Director Joanne G. Angle.

The Annual Meeting will include over 6,000 paper and poster presentations. Over 450 of these have been identified as multi-country collaborations.

In addition, special recognition awards will be presented during the five-day meeting including:

  • The Proctor Medal
  • The Cogan Award
  • The Friedenwald Award
  • The Mildred Weisenfeld Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology
  • ARVO/Alcon Early Career Clinician-Scientist Research Awards
  • The ARVO/Pfizer Ophthalmics Translational Research Awards
