Dr. Rita Colwell delivers 2005 Barmes Global Health lecture on November 15

What: The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the Fogarty International Center, both part of the National Institutes of Health, jointly announce the 2005 David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture. Rita R. Colwell, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, will present a talk entitled, "Global Climate, Environmental Pathogens, and Human Health: A New Paradigm."

When: Tuesday, November 15, 2005, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Natcher Auditorium, NIH Building 45, Bethesda, Maryland USA. The event is free and open to the public; it will be videocast live at http://videocast.nih.gov.

Why: This annual lecture series honors the late David E. Barmes, a long-standing World Health Organization employee, special expert for international health in the NIDCR Office of International Health, and ardent spokesman for global health. The series was established in 2001 to honor his lifelong dedication to use research to improve health for those in low-income countries.

Rita R. Colwell, Ph.D., served as the 11th Director of the National Science Foundation from 1998 to 2004. As NSF Director, she served as Co-chair of the Committee on Science of the National Science and Technology Council. Before joining NSF, she was the President of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and Professor of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Maryland. Her interests are global infectious diseases, water, and health. She has authored or co-authored 16 books and more than 700 scientific publications. She earned her Ph.D. in Oceanography at the University of Washington, Seattle.
