Emeritus Director leading the way at Prince Henry's

Emeritus Director at Melbourne's Prince Henry's Institute, Professor Henry Burger, has been selected as the recipient of the 2006 NAMS/Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals Morrie M.Gelfand Leadership Award in Androgen Research.

The award recognises an individual whose outstanding research has advanced our understanding of the role of androgens in postmenopausal women.

Professor Burger said he was honoured to be selected for the prestigious Leadership Award.

"It is with great pleasure that I accept this award, which recognises many years of work by a whole team of colleagues in Melbourne, particularly the late Jean Hailes, as well as Professor's Lorraine Dennerstein and Susan Davis," he said.

A pioneer in reproductive endocrinology, Professor Burger has worked in the field for more than 30 years.

He has received countless accolades for his research into the management of the peri and postmenopause, female and male infertility, hirsutism and the role of the gonadal hormone, inhibin, in ovarian cancer.

Most recently, Professor Burger was elected to Honorary Membership of the prestigious UK Society for Endocrinology. He is also a past winner of the Society's highest accolade The Dale Medal, in recognition of his world leading studies in endocrinology.

Professor Burger was honoured in the 1993 Queen's Birthday list when he was appointed as an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (A.O.). In 1994 he was elected to Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science (F.A.A.) and was chosen as the winner of the US Endocrine Society's 'Distinguished Physician' Award in 1999.

Professor Burger is a former President of the Endocrine Society of Australia, the Australasian Menopause Society and past Treasurer and President of the International Menopause Society.
