FEMMSS2: Knowledge that Matters

Questions of difference, democracy and justice have been at the forefront of feminist discussions about what knowledge matters for social justice. How knowledge is produced, distributed, and taken up is intricately connected to questions of equality, ethics, sustainability, power, identity, voice, and social change. Activism and advocacy are so central to feminist knowledge that Loraine Code argues "without advocacy and the negotiations it commonly enlists knowledge is not possible, in a strong sense, across diverse communities and socio-ecological situations."

Keynote speakers include:

  • Lorraine Code, York University
"Advocacy, Negotiation, and the Politics of Unknowing"
  • Sandra Harding, UCLA
"Empiricism and Standpoint in Feminist Science Studies: Coalitions and Divergences in Research Practices and Political Philosophies"
  • Suzanne Franzway, University of South Australia
"What does it Matter? The Problem of Gender Equity in Engineering"
  • Sue V. Rosser, Dean, Georgia Institute of Technology
"Dynamism and Disillusionment in the Translation of Theories into Activism: Applying Feminist Critiques to Attempt Institutional Transformation to Diversity Leadership in Science and Technology"
  • Nancy Tuana, Penn State University
    "Bringing Feminism to Policy"
