The Gerontological Society of America has chosen Rafael de Cabo of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to receive its 2006 Nathan Shock New Investigator Award. The distinction is given for outstanding contributions to new knowledge about aging through basic biological research.

The award presentation will take place at GSA's 59th Annual Scientific Meeting, which will be held from November 16th-20th, 2006 in Dallas, TX. The actual conferral will occur on Saturday the 18th at 12:15 p.m. at the Adam's Mark Dallas Hotel. The meeting is organized to foster interdisciplinary interactions among clinical, administrative, and research professionals in the field of gerontology.

In addition to his post as a tenure track investigator at the NIA, de Cabo also serves on the board of directors of the American Aging Association. The main focus of his research is to elucidate mechanisms involved in the anti-aging effects of caloric restriction. His knowledge and expertise in the fields of plasma membrane redox, aging, and nutrition have also won him international acclaim.

The award was established in 1986 to honor Dr. Nathan Shock, a pioneer in gerontological research at the National Institutes of Health, and a founding member of GSA. The winner traditionally presents a lecture at the Annual Scientific Meeting the following year.
