GSA confers 2006 Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award to Virginia Tech's Calasanti

The Gerontological Society of America has chosen Virginia Tech's Toni M. Calasanti as the 2006 recipient of the Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award. This distinguished honor recognizes insightful and innovative publications on aging and life course development in the behavioral and social sciences.

The award presentation will take place at GSA's 59th Annual Scientific Meeting, which will be held from November 16th-20th, 2006 in Dallas, TX. The actual conferral will occur on Saturday the 18th at 12:15 p.m. at the Adam's Mark Dallas Hotel. The meeting is organized to foster interdisciplinary interactions among clinical, administrative, and research professionals in the field of gerontology.

Calasanti was chosen for her paper, "Feminist Gerontology and Old Men." She has previously been cited for her well-reasoned approach to feminism and her ability to generalize its relevance to social gerontology. This particular paper represents a conceptually sophisticated analysis of applying the "gender lens" to issues of aging - as well as examining how gender intersects with class, race and ethnicity, and sexual orientation in terms of power relations.

The Kalish Award is underwritten by Baywood Publishing Company, with whom Dr. Kalish was long associated. Any empirical or conceptual publication that represents state-of-the-art thinking in aging and life course development is eligible for the award, provided it is in English and was published in the last three years.
