International and American Associations for Dental Research present awards and fellowships

As part of the Opening Ceremonies of its 85th General Session & Exhibition, convening today at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), along with its largest Division, the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), will present numerous prestigious awards and fellowships. Details follow:

IADR Distinguished Service Award

Presented to Robert "Skip" Collins (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA), this prestigious award was established by the IADR Board of Directors for a member who has not served as an IADR Officer but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. Dr. Collins served the IADR for 11 years as Deputy Executive Director, and as Interim Executive Director. The award, supported by the J. Morita Corporation, consists of a plaque and travel expenses to the IADR General Session in New Orleans. This is the 10th year the award has been presented.

IADR Honorary Membership

The three most recent living IADR Past Presidents may select an Honorary Member who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year, Honorary Membership is bestowed on Jiri F. Mestecky, University of Alabama, Birmingham (USA). Dr. Mestecky has made numerous contributions of high quality to oral and dental research. He is a mucosal immunologist who discovered the J chain, founded the international Society for Mucosal Immunology, and was the first to show in humans that the oral cavity was part of the mucosal immune system by demonstrating that ingestion of antigen (Strep. mutans) led to antibodies in saliva. This award recognizes not only his numerous scientific contributions to, but also his support of, oral and dental research, illustrated by his Departmental leadership at the University of Alabama, which has led to the mentorship of numerous dental scientists who have, in their tur
