Interventional cardiologists assemble in Orlando, Fla., for SCAI Annual Scientific Sessions

Angioplasty, stents, and other nonsurgical, catheter-based procedures used by interventional cardiologists to treat cardiovascular disease are increasingly replacing open-heart surgery. The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) will bring together experts from around the world to share the latest news and information about stents, rapidly evolving therapies, and other breakthroughs in cardiovascular care. SCAI's Annual Scientific Sessions will convene Wednesday, May 9, through Saturday, May 12, 2007, in Orlando, Florida. SCAI is the worlds leading medical society for invasive and interventional cardiologists.

Highlights include

  1. Lectures by many of the worlds most distinguished physician-researchers on techniques and tools coming down the medical pipeline, including percutaneous aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair, stem cell therapy, and treatment of migraine headache;
  2. New analyses on the causes of blood clots (thrombosis) in patients with drug-eluting stents, and how experts think this rare but dangerous side effect can be prevented;
  3. A critical look at some of the most hotly debated questions in cardiovascular care, such as whether 90 minutes is really an appropriate goal for door-to-balloon time and whether PCI is a viable option for patients with a blockage in the vitally important left main coronary artery;
  4. New findings on causes of, and treatment for, conditions such as the so-called Broken Heart Syndrome, Intestinal Angina, and holes in the heart
  5. Updates on new and rapidly evolving treatments of infants and young children with congenital heart disease; and
  6. Insights on the use of new imaging technologies for the early detection and treatment of coronary artery disease.
