Marc Levine, M.D., of Penn, wins Eminent Scientist of the Year award from the IRPC

(Philadelphia, PA) - Marc Levine, MD, Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has received an Eminent Scientist of the Year 2006 award from the International Research Promotion Council (IRPC) in India. The award is based on his clinical expertise and research excellence in the field of gastrointestinal radiology. The IRPC presents the World Scientists Forum awards annually by selecting recipients whose work has had a positive impact on medical care throughout the world, especially in developing countries.

Levine has served as the chief of the gastrointestinal section in the Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania since 1998. Additionally, in 2004, Levine was appointed as an advisory dean in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, a position in which he is responsible for advising and mentoring one-fourth of each medical school class.

Levine has been a prolific researcher in all areas of gastrointestinal radiology, co-authoring 189 original scientific articles and 108 chapters, review articles, and editorials in the medical literature, including seminal papers on the radiographic findings of HIV esophagitis, herpes esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, NSAID-induced erosive gastritis, Helicobacter pylori gastritis, and gastric MALT lymphoma. He also has been a leading proponent of double-contrast barium studies for evaluating the gastrointestinal tract and has authored or co-edited several of the major texts in his field, including Radiology of the Esophagus, the 2nd and 3rd editions of Double Contrast Gastrointestinal Radiology, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of Textbook of Gastrointestinal Radiology (all published and translated into multiple languages by W. B. Saunders).
