It's a national survey unique in its probing of people's opinions about trust in the safety of the national food web and their attitudes about the federal government, the food industry and their own role.

When: 9:30 a.m. EST Monday, April 24, 2006.

Where: National Press Club
Zenger Room
Washington, DC

Why: To provide guidance to government, industry and educators all of whom have stake and responsibility in the safety of the nation's food. While there is a shortage of recent data on food-borne illness its frequency and its origins existing data indicates that food-borne illnesses send some 325,000 people to the hospital each year, and kill 5,000 people. Annual medical costs and lost wages are estimated at between $6.6 and $37.1 billion.

To properly plan and educate about food safety, the new Food Safety Policy Center at MSU offers a look to begin to understand what Americans think about the underpinnings of policy for food safety their perceptions, their expectations, and their priorities.
