Professors named Fulbright scholars

Two Kent State faculty have been awarded Fulbright scholarships for 2007-2008. Associate Professor of Exercise Science Dr. Michael Kalinski will study and teach in India, and Professor of Geology Dr. Daniel Holm will conduct research in Poland.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the programs inception, more than 273,500 participants chosen for their leadership potential have had the opportunity to observe each others political, economic and cultural institutions.

Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala, Punjab, Asias largest sports institute, will host Kalinski, who has enjoyed collaborative research with scientists in Ukraine, Poland, Russia and Spain for more than a decade. He also served as a visiting professor in Italy and Spain in 2006.

Holm will use his scholarship to continue a collaboration begun in Poland and the Czech Republic, where he has studied the exhumation of rocks in the Sudetes Mountains for the past two years. Holm, a 1986 Fulbright Student Scholar, will research how deeply buried high-pressure rocks are brought back up to the Earths surface.

Holm and Kalinski join Kent State Ashtabula Campus associate professor of English Dr. Roger Craik among the ranks of Fulbright winners for 2007-2008. Craik was awarded a Fulbright scholarship earlier this year to teach at Sofia University, Bulgaria.
