Rutgers presents Susman award to College of Nursing faculty member Marlene Rankin

(NEWARK, N.J., May 2, 2007) -- Rutgers University presented one of its Warren I. Susman awards, the universitys highest honor for innovative teaching and mentoring, to Marlene Rankin, a Rutgers College of Nursing faculty member, during a ceremony at Rutgers President Richard L. McCormicks home on May 2.

The award is named after a prominent cultural historian and popular faculty member who served Rutgers for more than 25 years until his death in 1985.

"Marlene is an outstanding teacher and it was an honor to nominate her for this award," said Felissa R. Lashley, dean and professor at the College of Nursing at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. "She is a real asset to our students and this reward is well deserved."

"It is wonderful to be honored for something you love doing. Our students exemplify commitment, leadership and caring as they enter the nursing profession," said Rankin, clinical associate professor. "Receiving this award positively reinforces my role in their evolution toward independence and maturity."

Rankin, a Princeton, N.J. resident, has taught at Rutgers College of Nursing since 1992. She earned her Ph.D and her masters of science in nursing degrees at Texas Womens University College of Nursing and her masters degree at Johns Hopkins University. Rankin completed her undergraduate degree at Penn State University.
