Springer and the Society of General Internal Medicine announce partnership

The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) has chosen Springer as the publisher of the Journal of General Internal Medicine (JGIM). Springer will begin publishing the society's journal both online and in print in January 2007 with Volume 22, No.1. JGIM is a peer-reviewed journal featuring articles written by clinicians, clinical researchers, and medical educators worldwide who are dedicated to improving patient care, education and research in internal medicine.

The monthly journal publishes original research articles; brief reports of original research; succinct descriptions of innovative approaches to improving medical education, medical practice and hospital medicine; articles on health policy issues; reviews; and case reports. JGIM is ranked 16th out of 103 journals listed by ISI in the category of General and Internal Medicine and had an impact factor of 2.8 in 2004.

Springer will publish the Journal of General Internal Medicine in both print and electronic formats to serve the needs of librarians and readers around the world. The journal will be available on Springer's online platform SpringerLink and will include Online First, Cross Reference Linking, and Alert services. Under www.springerlink.com, researchers can find more than 1,250 electronic journals, 29 books series (with 3,200 volumes), handbooks, reference works, and databases. JGIM now offers all authors, via the Springer Open Choice program, the option of publishing their articles with open access.

Co-Editor-in-Chief of JGIM, Dr. William Tierney of the Indiana School of Medicine, observed, "SGIM sought a publisher that could bring the excellent journal content to the widest possible international audience and increase its impact on the medical community. In Springer, we have found an outstanding publishing partner capable of meeting those goals."

SGIM President Dr. Barbara Turner commented, "Springer's online platform, with Online First, will ensure that artic
