The future of biofuels is not in corn

The nations headlong rush to embrace bio-fuels gained yet more momentum with the Senates decision last month to quintuple the production of ethanol and more advanced biofuels by 2022.

The industry claims that biofuels will not only lower the greenhouse gas emissions that accelerate global warming, but theyre the key to reducing U.S. dependency on foreign oil imports and to revitalizing family farming in rural America.

However, according to The Rush to Ethanol a new and comprehensive analysis by Food & Water Watch, the Network for New Energy Choices, and the Vermont Law School Environmental Law Center biofuels, and corn-ethanol especially, are being dangerously oversold. By distinguishing snake-oil solutions from scientifically sound claims, the report will better inform the national debate on bio-fuels.
